These maps have developed alongside the main game for more than a decade, ranging from simple adventure maps to full-blown game modes.

p>Many consider the 2009-2012 golden age of Minecraft maps to be 2009. Minecraft was simpler back then with less tools and mechanics (except for Minecraft mods) that creators could explore. The limitations didn't stop developers from making a range of well-known maps, such as Skyblock and The Walls. They have been downloaded by millions of times and played by hundreds of millions through YouTube? Let's Plays. While they're similar in structure, both maps offer different versions of Minecraft's main gameplay. Skyblock is one example. It places you on a small island in the sky with only lava, water, and a tree to live. There are also a lot of difficult challenges to conquer. The Walls is a battle royale inspired by the Hunger Games where each team has time to prepare before the walls that divide them fall down and a game of free for all begins.

p>When talking about pivotal members of the Minecraft map community, you'd be hard pressed to find a more influential person than Vechs who has developed numerous influential maps - check out Super Hostile and Race for the Wool - that set the bar for what a great Minecraft minigame should be able to offer. "I've been making custom content for games since Duke Nukem 3D, and my Super Hostile series has over two million downloads," Vechs says. p>"It's not every day that you invent a new genre. It feels pretty good," reflects Vechs. My old method of making maps was to create a world, and then open it in MCedit and delete everything. "I like to start completely from scratch." While he sticks to his old methods however, the improvement in quality is incredible to witness for experienced map makers.

p>"Minecraft maps are changing for the better, assuredly. What was offered were a bunch of worlds people had let Minecraft create, and then discovered a great area in that world and created a kind of challenge there by putting up signs. Low-effort maps were common back then. You would be laughed at for doing such a thing today. The quality of the products available has risen dramatically."

p>Lucian Tash, also known as Chopper2112, is the founder of the Minecraft-partnered map-making group Yeggs. The group started in 2015 and has created 23 maps. Tash and his fellow team members began creating maps as a hobby. "Yeggs was originally created as a server on the laptop that was broken down, where a few real-life friends would play during the break. Tash says that we began creating maps of a small scale from the beginning until 2019, when we joined the Realms Program.

p>Quality control is something that Yeggs takes very seriously. Tash states that the primary goal of Yeggs is to make games available. This, in conjunction with the limitations of Realms' service, often requires us to find creative solutions to lag-related problems. "Sometimes you'll have an idea for something that would end up using lots of resources. A lot of the technical aspects of the Minecraft map are based on static entities within the game. This makes it quite difficult to get the proper hardware.

p>A number of the maps created by Yeggs make use of command blocks which can be used to execute lines of code. Road Runners is their latest map. It was inspired by the Frogger-style humor of the popular mobile game Crossy Road. The map employs commands blocks to make Minecraft a top-down race against time where you must carefully dodge deadly mobs.

p>Tash says that the new commands have allowed ideas to be realized that wouldn't have been possible in the pre-1.13 version of the game. The way that custom maps are created has been drastically altered by the introduction of datapacks. Not only does it allow for more straightforward access to commands than command blocks had previously however, it also allows for an Minecraft map developer to call on large numbers of commands at the same time, or even use recursion in order to make a function call to itself."

p>Minecraft is a constantly evolving project that doesn't rest on its laurels. Vechs says that the base for Minecraft's enduring community isn't changing. Empathy is the primary ability to map. You need to create an imaginary model of what the player will see and feels, and what they will think. Empathy allows you to create difficult curves and to determine when you should give breaks or add scenic views to give the player an impression of wonder.
