Everyone has their own fond recollection of their first time playing Minecraft, usually loaded with the same warm reminiscence of a child waking up early on Christmas morning. Minecraft is a warm blanket for the soul. The cup of warm hot chocolate that is the perfect complement to this image is the community-created maps. These maps have evolved alongside Minecraft for a decade, from basic adventure maps to full-blown game modes.

Many believe that the golden age of Minecraft maps to run between 2009 and 2012. Minecraft was simpler in the past, with less tools and mechanics (except for Minecraft mods) that creators could explore. The limitations didn't stop developers from creating a variety of well-known maps like Skyblock and The Walls. They have been downloaded by millions of times and watched by millions of users via YouTube Let's Plays. While they're similar in structure they offer distinct versions of Minecraft's main gameplay. Skyblock for instance, puts you on a tiny island in the sky, with only water, lava, and a tree for you to survive. There are also a lot of difficult challenges to conquer. The Walls is an action-packed battle royale based on the Hunger Games where each team has time to prepare before the walls that divide them fall down and a game of free for all game begins.

Vechs is among the most influential members of the Minecraft map community. He has created many influential maps, including Race for the Wool and Super Hostile. These maps set the standards for what a quality Minecraft game should be. Vechs states, "I've been creating custom content for games ever since Duke Nukem 3D," and his Super Hostile series has more than two million downloads. Super Hostile has attracted an enormous amount of attention from both influencers and community members alike. There are a lot of Super Hostile Let's Plays with more than one million views on YouTube.

"It's not often that you invent a genre. Vechs says it feels very good. My old map-making method was to create a world, then open it in MCedit and delete everything. I like to start totally from scratch." While remaining loyal to his own method, the sheer improvement in quality from the past is awe-inspiring to witness for the veteran map maker. https://www.kd76.com/

"Minecraft maps are changing in a positive way It is a fact. There were many worlds that Minecraft created, and then people found an area within that world to place signs. In the past, maps that required little effort made from generated worlds were the commonplace. Today, such a thing will get you ridiculed. The quality of the products offered has risen dramatically."

Lucian Tash, also known as Chopper2112, is the leader of the Minecraft-partnered map-making group Yeggs. The team was founded in 2015 and has since made 23 maps. At the time, creating maps was nothing more than an enjoyable pastime for Tash and his buddies. "Yeggs was originally created to serve as an online server on a broken laptop, on which a few of his real-life buddies would play during the break. Then we started making small maps , and in 2019 we joined the Realms program," Tash explains.

The Realms content creator program was created by Mojang in 2014 and serves as a curated library of community-made maps, including minigames world template-style maps and adventure maps.

Yeggs takes quality control extremely seriously. Tash states that the primary goal of Yeggs is to make games available. This, along with the limitations of Realms the service, often requires us to find creative solutions to the lag issue. Sometimes, you might come up with an idea that would require a lot of resources. A lot of the technical aspects of the Minecraft map are based on static objects within the game. This can make it quite difficult to obtain the proper hardware.

Yeggs has used command blocks to make a variety of maps. These blocks are used to execute lines of code. One their most recent maps, Road Runners, is inspired by the frogger-style gameplay of the popular mobile game Crossy Road. The map employs command blocks to create Minecraft an all-top-down race against the clock in which you must carefully dodge deadly mobs.

Tash says that the new commands have allowed for ideas to come to life that could not have been realized in the pre-1.13 version of the game. "The introduction of datapacks has also enormously changed the way maps that are custom made are created. It gives easier access to commands than the command blocks did in the past. A Minecraft map creator can call multiple commands at once or use Recursion to make a function call.

Minecraft is a constantly evolving project that doesn't sit on its accomplishments. Vechs explains that the basis for Minecraft's unstoppable community is not changing. "The most important skill to make maps is empathy. You must run a mental model of what the player's vision is and how they feel, and what they will think. Empathy lets you design challenging curves and to know when it is time to give breaks or add scenic vistas to give the player an impression of wonder.
